Metals We Buy
At Palm Beach Metal, we're equipped to buy and recycle a number of different metal types, some even that other scrap metal buyers won't touch.
Click on an image below for more detailed information about the types of metals we buy.
Aluminum
Aluminum is one of the few metals that can be recycled infinitely, and for this reason, more than 30 percent of all aluminum produced in the U.S. comes from recycled scrap and approximately 75 percent of all aluminum produced since the late 1800s is still in use today. In addition, aluminum recycling requires only 5 percent of the energy used to make new aluminum. Suitable sources for aluminum recycling include:
- Cans
- Extrusions
- Screen Enclosures
- Cast Window Frames
- Old Sheet
- Air Conditioner Coils
- Transmissions (Fluid must be drained. Fluid pan must be removed or have a visible 6″ x 6″ hole.)
- Lawn Chairs
- Engine Blocks
- Barbeque Grills Wheels
- Pots and Pans
- Hurricane Shutters
- Aluminum Radiators
- ...and more
Brass
Brass is not an element metal, but is an alloy composed of a copper base metal mixed with varying percentages of zinc. Like aluminum, brass is sustainable and, therefore, recycling brass makes better economic sense than forging new material. Brass recycling involves melting it down and pouring it into brass ingots. Suitable sources for brass recycling include:
- Faucets
- Fittings
- Valves
- Keys
- Turnings
- Bearings
- Screen
- Radiators
- Heater Cores
- Tubes
- Plate and Sheet
- Bar Stock
- ...and more
Copper
After iron and aluminum, copper is the third leading metal produced. Copper recycling is a fast-growing area as the uses for copper rapidly expand from the electrical and plumbing trades into computer and other electronic components. A modern automobile can contain as much as 80 pounds of copper and a Boeing 727 jet about 9,000 pounds. Suitable sources for copper recycling include:
- Tubing
- Wire
- Insulated Wire
- Electric Motors
- Roofing Sheets
- Bus Bars
- Pipe
- Coils
- ...and more
Iron / Steel
Steel is composed of an iron base metal mixed with varying degrees of other trace materials, including carbon, manganese, chromium, vanadium and tungsten to define texture, strength and hardness. Because iron and steel are used a great deal in construction materials, steel recycling is quite popular worldwide. Sources for iron recycling and steel recycling include:
- Electric Motors
- Beams
- Railroad Scrap
- Angles
- Sheets
- Plates
- Construction Equipment
- Farm Machinery
- Channels
- Demolition Scrap
- Old Machinery
- Tunings and Bearings
- Miscellaneous Industrial Scrap
- Pipe
- Cast Iron
- Light Iron
- Heavy Iron
- Steel Cable (Must be cut into lengths of 4 feet or less.)
- Appliances Including: Refrigerators, Stoves, Washers, Dryers (Capacitors must be removed. Must not contain refrigerants or compressor oil.)
- Drums, Barrels, Pails, Etc. (If closed-top, tops must be removed. Must be rinsed, cleaned and dry, with no remaining liquids or residue.)
- Engine Blocks (Must be free of all oil. Oil pan must be removed.)
- Propane Tanks and Other Compressed Gas Cylinders (Must contain no liquids and be de-valve. Smaller than 25 gallons must be cut in half. Twenty-Six gallons to 100 gallons must be cut in half or have an 12″ x 12″ hole, at minimum, and contain no combustible vapors. Larger than 100 gallons must be cut in half or have a 3′ x 3′ hole, at minimum, and contain no combustible vapors).
- Tanks (Must be rinsed and cleaned. If tanks contain baffles, must have holes on both sides.
- Automotive gas/diesel tanks must be cut in half or follow Tanks spec above and contain no combustible vapors.
- Hydraulic Cylinders (Fluid must be drained. Cylinders must be disassembled or cut in half.)
- Automobiles (Title required. Antifreeze, oil, Freon and transmission fluid must be removed. Lead acid batteries, wheel weights and mercury switches must be removed. Fuel tanks must be removed, or drained with a visible 12″ x 12″ hole, and must not contain combustible vapors).
- ...and more
Stainless Steel and High-Temp Alloys
Stainless steel is composed of an iron base metal mixed with chromium and is used in highly corrosive environments because of its resistance to corrosion. Stainless steel recycling makes up a smaller but important part of the metals recycling trade. An average stainless steel object is composed of about 60 percent recycled material. There are many sources of stainless steel found in both the commercial and residential arenas that are suitable for stainless steel recycling. These include:
- Restaurant Kitchen Equipment
- Pipe
- Angles
- Plate and Sheet
- Tubes
- Nuts and Bolts
- And More
Although high-temperature alloy recycling makes up a smaller percentage of the metals recycling trade, it’s an important component. Recycled high-temperature alloys are used in the aerospace, aircraft and defense industries where strength and resistance to heat expansion are prime concerns. The alloys we buy that are suitable for high-temperature alloy recycling include:
- Monel
- Cupro-Nickel
- Hastelloy
- Inconel
- Waspaloy
- Incoloy
- Nickel
- Titanium
- And More
Other
Other sources of metal we buy at Palm Beach Metal include:
- Lead
- Magnesium
- Batteries
- Die Cast
- Catalytic Converters
- And More
Unacceptable Materials
There are numerous materials we do NOT accept at Palm Beach Metal Recycling for sanitary reasons and risk to health and safety.
- Acetylene or Oxygen Tanks (unless cut in half)
- Ammunition
- Asbestos (no scrap material containing Asbestos)
- Ballasts (of any kind)
- Cast Iron Pipe with Lead Joints
- Capacitors
- Computer Monitors, Printers, Keyboards
- Fax Machines or Scanners
- Complete Hydraulic Cylinders
- Flammable or Combustible Materials
- Flourescent Light Bulbs or Ballasts
